A community consultation was organised on 14 June to discuss racial vilification and strategies to address the issue for submission to the Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Education and Community Inclusion.
FINACT welcomes the ACT Government’s Exposure Draft Multicultural Recognition Bill 2022 for public consultation. It ensures that the ACT continues to grow as a welcoming, diverse, unified and inclusive community. The Bill is set to be presented to the Legislative Assembly later this year and demonstrates a strong commitment to the vision of Canberra as a diverse and inclusive community.
Since our last newsletter, Australia voted for a change with an election win for the Labor party led by Prime Minister Anthony Alabenese. Canberra being the seat of the federal government, we will see some more changes in the next few months with machinery of government changes.
FINACT looks forward to working with the new government for a better future for all Australians.

FINACT Ten-Year Celebratins & Special Souvenir

As discussed at the FINACT General Council Meeting, we are preparing a souvenir documenting the FINACT achievements in providing excellent services to the community over the last decade.
We acknowledge the excellent leadership of the last six presidents who have steered the organisation to become such a successful and well respected community group in the ACT.

Community Consultation - Inquiry into Racial Vilification
The Education and Community Inclusion Committee is conducting an inquiry into racial vilification in the ACT. FINACT has been invited to make a submission.
FINACT hosted a community consultation session on 14 June 2022. The group discussed - social and work context in which discrimination occurs, effectiveness of existing reporting mechanisms, adequacy of existing processes and practices, value of establishing Anti-racism strategy for the ACT and raise the awareness through education.
Someone who has faced racial discrimination in Canberra has created the Hard Project, which is a platform for people to come forward and share their stories. It is dedicated to creating awareness and bringing about a social change in our multicultural society. This is a really good initiative to not only raise awareness but also do something about it. We encourage readers to look at the Hard Project and promote it.
FINACT will make a submission to the Standing Committee following our public consultation. This is an important function for FINACT as a peak body to capture and provide community feedback informing policy development.

Red Cross Lifeblood
Let's band together to save lives!
Dr Sally Gavin from Red Cross was the guest speaker at the FINACT General Council Meeting on 15 May. Dr Gavin highlighted a few facts related to blood donation, encouraged the Indian community to come forward to donate blood, save lives.

1 in 3 of us are likely to need blood in our lifetime, yet only 1 in 30 donate. Aside from saving lives through blood donation, it’s a unique opportunity for all of us to band together and give something more powerful than money.
Donated blood can be used to help people in all sorts of life-giving ways. The need is constant and the person receiving it could be fighting cancer or going through a difficult pregnancy, or they could be someone who relies on regular transfusions to stay healthy — or even, stay alive. Now that’s something worth uniting for!
Australia’s demand for plasma is currently at an all-time high, and this is FINACT’s chance to help meet growing patient needs. Plasma is the liquid component of our blood, and carries the red cells, white cells and platelets. It is a powerful and versatile part of your blood, used to unlock 18 different life-giving ways for a range of diseases and medical conditions such as burns, cancer, people with immune deficiencies, patients with blood or brain disorders and many more. Please contact FINACT or Lifeblood directly if you’re interested to donate.

Sponsorship Appreciated for FINACT Events
We understand that one of the main reasons to sponsor a tournament and any event could be to promote one’s business and generate goodwill in the community. Sponsoring the FINACT events will give you brand recognition among the fastest-growing community group of Indians in the ACT and increase sales or traffic to sponsor’s website through their banner on our website (www.finact.net.au ).
Indians are the fastest growing population in Australia. This has resulted in increased air traffic between India and Australia; increased telecommunication; and enhanced trade and cultural ties. For sporting events - players and their supporters make playing cricket a fiercely competitive and memorable event. They will promote the game and use your services to show their appreciation.
In addition to providing an excellent opportunity to connect with the Indian sub-continent communities, the FINACT events' sponsorship will:
- enable sponsors to reach out to wider community groups in ACT and surrounds
- fulfil sponsors business objectives and attract sizeable potential customers
- provide a lasting impression of their business
- promote sports and physical activities in the community
- motivate and assist young players participating in the tournament and community activities
- attract favourable feedback from organisers and media partners
- generate great feel-good stories in Indian community and back to India and neighbouring countries and
- fulfil sponsor’s corporate and social responsibilities
