Indian Independence is one of the great events of human history. The 67th anniversary is a chance for us to acknowledge the achievements of Indian democracy, supported by the Indian diaspora around the globe.
Fourteen years ago, I spent a month in India, travelling and meeting with public intellectuals and political leaders of all parties. One person I met with was Narendra Modi, who was then the General Secretary of the BJP.
I congratulate Prime Minister Modi on his election, and hope he will visit Australia in November for the G20, the first Indian Prime Minister since 1988 to do so.
I wish all members of the Indian community in Australia a very happy Indian Independence Day.
