President’s Note – End of Year 2015

FINACT has made several initiatives, organized events and supported communities this year. FINACT organized Indian Independence Day in association with High Commission of India, Indian Australian association of Canberra and all Indian communities.

FINACT held meetings with elected representative of ACT including the Chief Minister and leader of opposition to brief the leaders on Indian community perspective on various developments in the territory.

meetingWithin last six months a number of concerns ranging from individual family disputes to the effect of government policies on the community (like taxi drivers about introduction of Uber) were brought to FINACT’s attention. We facilitated the financial support to the individuals from Indian High Commission and to convey the concerns of Taxi drivers we held meetings with Transport minister to present their perspective.

2015 also witnessed some ordinary incidents such as the racial attack on a taxi driver. FINACT appreciate the concern shown by the authorities and also held meeting with Australian Federal Police and Taxi Management Company to discuss and formulate the strategies and make recommendations to the government to eradicate these kind of incidents.

IndDayCupIn addition to organizing the FINACT T-20 2015 tournament and continuing the legacy. FINACT cricket coordination committee also held a lunch meeting with Australian cricket star Brad Haddin Brad who is keen to reinvest in the Canberra cricketing community. FINACT subcommittee discussed about promoting the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars ODI versus India, here at Manuka Oval on Tuesday 2nd February and hopefully drawing a record crowd attendance.

It is a great privilege for me to send my greetings on behalf of Federation of Indian Associations of ACT for a very merry Christmas and a happy and exciting new year 2016.
