September updates

The first couple of months were filled with events and activities for the executive committee of FINACT. After the successful event of Independence Day celebration at Theo Notaras Centre on 15 August, the FINACT has been engaged in a number of different activities of community interest.

Meetings with our leaders

As part of an engagement exercise, the FINACT executive committee held meetings with Dr Anderw Leigh MP (Member from Fraser) on 28th August, Mr Jeremy Hanson MLA (leader of opposition ) on 1st September, Senator Katy Gallagher on 2nd September and with Senator Zed Seselja on 4th September. We are pleased to inform you that Ms Yvette Berry MLA, the Minister for Multicultural Affairs has kindly accepted to become the Patron of the FINACT. The Federation is very keen to work for community under the guidance and patronage of Minister Berry.

In these meeting FINACT introduced the elected representatives with concerns and public welfare initiatives led by Indian communities and associations, for example:

  1. The concerns of ACT taxi drivers with regards to the UBER ride and share
  2. Upcoming FINACT T-20 Cricket Tournament
  3. A project to develop a better understanding of the nature of domestic violence against immigrant women of South Asian ancestry in the ACT region by FINACT member association, especially by iWin.

In our deliberations, matters ranging from domestic violence among families of South Asian background, the outstanding request for India Centre and also a Christian Church for the Malayalee community (who still use the ‘Aramaic dialect – Syriac’ spoken by Jesus, as their liturgical language) were raised with appropriate authorities.

We are particularly thankful to the High Commission of India for providing the financial support to one of the victims of domestic issues (Indian citizen) on FINACT’s recommendations.

Community engagement

FINACT also held meetings with ACT Cricket and reached an agreement to hold the FINACT T-20 Cricket Tournament 2015 in partnership with ACT Cricket. This will be an official event in the calendar of ACT Cricket and the statistics for the FINACT matches will be available on myCricket website.

The tournament for this year will be starting on Sun 25 October 2015. All captains and managers have been contacted and briefed about the details. If you wish to support and sponsor this pupular tournament, please contact Secretary as soon as possible.
