Canberra celebrates International Day of Yoga on Sun 21 June

The 1st ever International Day of Yoga was organised by the High Commission o India in associaton with the Federation of Indian Association of ACT (FINACT) in Canberra in East West Lawns in front of Old Parliament of Australia from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

A well organised, well attended and well presented Yoga practices by disciples of Yoga Mandir (practising since 1975) in a perfect sunny winter day was a grand success. The event was supported by several Yoga schools, individual Yoga pracitioners (some of those Australian are practising Yoga for last 40 years – wow!!!) and community grroups in Canberra.

The declaration of this event came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. He stated that

“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

The United Nations General Assembly adopted and declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014 with record support of more than 170 countries.

Hope this event will generate enough awareness about its true physical, mental, social and spiritual benefits – to attain perfect balance of body, mind and soul.
